Tribal newbie says hi.Just building up my new toy and looking at the frame it looks long in the top tube. I'm 6 1" and wondering what size stem you tall guys are running on a large frame. Bought a thomson 90 x 0 Deg in anticipation to the build but think it may be too long. Any advice peeps.

Try it and see how you get on.
It is virtually impossible for you to get advice on this, as the type of ride you want from your bike will depend on the type of rider you are, your body shape, bar size, sweep, rise, etc. It might just be a case of trying out a few variables until you get the ride you want.
When we custon build a bike for someone we may fit a cheap stem and bars so that we can swap them around before fitting the right set that suit the owner, also we dont cut the steerer too close until you are happy you have the stem at the right height.

Ah yes i know its all about personal preference, just worried about the size of the thing.Using an ea70 carbon dh 2" rise, inline seat post and king headset. Mostly ride big cycle centres and fast single track aggressively. Just wanted to know what tall ish guys were using on a large as a pointer.

hi and welcome,
I'm 6' 3" and running the following on my large 08 575. Thompson X4 90mm 10 degree rise with Easton carbon Monkeylite hi-rise bars, also an in-line Thompson post. I do have the seat set back on the rails as I've got quite a long body but this set up is right for me. Did a 4 hour session at the weekend and it felt great. Steering with a 90mm stem feels responsive.
I would try your bike with parts you have as you can micro adjust the sweep of the bars and seat .etc to help.
I guess the forks you intend to run might affect things as well. ie: 140 or 160mm will affect the riding position.
Hope this helps. The 08 575 is an awesome bike.

Ah great cheers, just fitted forks,( 08 140 talas rlc ) 90 x 0 Deg stem with three spacers under stem so they can be cut down again if necessary.Seat quite far forward on rails but not all the way and it feels about right but first ride will tell.Cant wait to get out on her, just waiting for wheels and bars. Worries over.Phew.

Hi, when i build 575 yeti's for my customers, 90mm and 0 deg is always the starting point and most riders don't move much shorter unless they are into aggresive dh. I ran a 90mm on my 07 bike and i have just fitted a 90mm on my new one. Which i taking for it's maiden voyage this weekend at our testday(betd/Goldtec) Cheers Rob

Just had my first peddle and she fits a treat. Feels like so much more travel than my last main ride ( orange 5 se ).I know it has got 20mm or so more but it feels like inches more and yet on pro peddle its as solid as a solid thing. Chuffed to bits. Cant wait to use it in anger. ;D

As already stated stem length is a personal preference. I'll Try and make this a short story here; use to ride and still do a hardtail outfitted with a 120mm stem I think it was and loved it. Got a Yeti 2007 model ASX outfitted with the Yeti freeride kit which came with a 40mm length stem and riser handlebars and I love the ride, the more upright position suits me well. The shorter stem and the riser bars felt really strange at first, but noticed really quick that I didn't experiece back pain after a long ride. Rode the ASX for awhile without riding the hardtail mentioned. After that jumped on the hardtail in it's original setup and just couldn't ride it, since have installed the same 40mm length stem and the same riser bars and problem solved. Hardtail rides very close to the ASX as far as the cockpit geometry goes and backpain on the hardtail is no longer a problem. Don't be afraid to experiment with a shorter length stem! Personally I don't like a stretched out XC feeling and shortening up the stem made my hardtail useable and comfortable.
As long as you have the correct frame size for your heighth the above will apply across different bikes, otherwise throw this info out. Get the cockpit size comfortable on your favorite bike and apply that to other bikes. Shorter stems have work for me.
Hope that helps without any confusion, Scott

I'm 6ft 1 and i've got a medium '08 with a 90mm 10deg thomson stem. Fits great. Going by Yetis sizing chart I should be on a Large but the top tube length put me off. My previous bikes have been around the length of the medium. I guess its done to what your used to and the type of rider you are. I err on the slow up fast down side of things so i'm not to bothered about being stretched out XC style.
08' Yeti 575 are amazing - I've just returned from Innerliethen and cant stop smiling. ;D

I,m 6ft 4 and have a meduim asr I tried to set it up like my road bike and had a 130 stem and a flat bar and could not ride it so I bought a couple of cheap stems see chain reaction and have settled on a 105mm with a 6deg rise and a set of answer products pro taper carbon riser bars will proably replace the cheap stem with a syntace ti stem I am currently using a cheap inline seatpost and i,m not to sure going to use it a couple of more times than go back to my set back post before making a choice but if I go inline it will be a syntace p6 carbon s/post the shorter stem made the bike handle so well and the upright seating position made climbing easier too so the moral of the story is try a few set ups so you can feel the difference

I used a Thomson 90mm 10 deg. stem on my medium '07 575 and it felt really right, but when I swapped it to my medium '08 I found it too long. The top tube length is slightly longer on the 08's. I've swapped it for a 70mm 0 deg and it's the mutts nuts again. The 90mm stem now graces the wife's Orange 5, far better than the standards Tioga they come with. IMHO the new '08 575 is an absolute cracker of a bike, the best I've ridden .

I'm 5.11 and have a long top half and shortish legs at 30 inches...but the 575 feels a little ponderous as it's a long bike and with a longish stem felt too ponderous. Ed at Crosstrax has swapped the demo bike's stem over to 70mm and the bike is now so much quicker to rag...it feels more 'attack' position than XC...just what yo uneed on a bike with htis much travel...
