I was just undertaking some general maintenance recently as I had noticed after having completed a few recent rides, that the back end was a bit wobbly! This normally means that it is time to service the rear triangle bearings - or something similar. Possibly the free hub was worn or something was creating a bit of a loose end / slackness. I service the bike regularly and treat it to new parts when needed and generally keep it in good shape. It probably gets ridden on average about once a week. So, I started stripping things down trying to find the problem and initially thought I had tracked it down to the Du bush at the back end of the Fox shock. Popped a new one in, put it all together, torqued everything up nicely and wait…. no the wobble was still there. Damn. Strip it all down again and spend a while going through everything trying to find the culprit. It was only after wiggling the titanium through bolt in the end of the seat stays that I realised all was not as it should be!
It seems as the surrounds, that are perhaps metal ferrules, that sit in the carbon fibre, had become detached. That is a real bugger! I have to admit that although I am occasionally nervous about having a carbon rear end, I do look after it and try not to bash it. It certainly has served me well and the whole bike has in the main exceeded my expectations.
What you can see in the picture is that the metal insert in the top of the carbon seat say, on both sides, had detached. It moves and rotates and probably has about a 1mm disconnect. You can move the insert and rotate it. Although an up to 1mm movement at this end doesn't sound a lot, by the time you get to the axle / hub end of the bike the affect is multiplied.
Looks like it is going to be a trip to my LBS where I originally bought the bike from. They are very helpful in there and I understand have a good rapport with the Yeti rep. Let's see how I get on.
Has anyone had a similar problem - or know of anything like this. I have had a reasonable trawl around the internet - but nothing this specific on ASR5's?
