Hi Guys,
Merry Boxing Day. I'm already starting to plan my holiday this summer and wanting to make a few changes to my bike build.
I'm going to ride 1 x 9 maybe 10 but I have a few questions to ask.
Is it just a matter of buying a 10 speed cassette and shifter or do I have to change the wheel rear hub too?
I also want one ring up from. My build is all mountain so what size chainring u front is a good size for all round use. I ride morzine, Alpe d'huez etc.
Advice would be much appreciated.

your wheel/hub combo will be fine, you'll need a new chain too and 32t or 34t should be fine up front

I couldn't decide between 32 and 34 so went with a 33 e-13 ring

Good choice! I'm running a 32 and thinking of swapping up a tooth.

Cassette size
Is there really much of a noticeable difference from 11-32 / 11-34 / 11-36 cassette. I want an all mountain set up?

I tried 1x10 with a 34 to an 11-34 cassette, it was ok for the flatter rides, but take it anywhere(steep) hilly it was awful, and that was on my ARC, just too much stress through my legs in the smallest gear.
I went to 36 cassette and it was better.
I've since gone to 2x10.

I'm running a 32 up front with a 11-36 on the rear. I am more than happy, with only the really loosest most vertical climbs out of reach (more to do with my riding ability than the gearing though). Considering a swap to 33 if anything.

Hi, I'm on a 33 And 11-36, it's a great way to get fit! Agree with JTB that only the steepest climbs are really a problem, most of the time you just have to dig deep and keep going while those around you drop into granny ring. All depends on what cadence you are comfortable riding at. I've been off the bike for a few months due to a house move and I do think I'll suffer getting back on it now.

A friend of mine has offered me his 1 x 10 setup to try on my SB66C. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to live with it so I don't want to spend loads of cash on a chain device.
I've got an XT Shadow+ rear mech. Does anyone have any experience of running a single front ring with only this type of mech or will I need a chain device?

You will need some sort of chain device to try it out.
There are 2 main types, Iscg mounting and you'll need the Iscg mount.
Or one that direct fits to the front mech mount.
If you don't run a guide, the chain will fall off.

Thanks Andrew. I was lucky enough to get one of the turquoise ISCG mounts from you so I'm good in that area.
Any recommendations on a cheap chain guide?
