HI everyone just a quicky, i have an asx which i have just built up and love but i like the 303 and was wondering if it is possible to make one up as a freeride bike or is it solely downhill? Thanks and another big thanks to Andrew for the forum
Mainly because I found my AS-X was a little to close to how I'd built my 575 up at the time.
IMHO The 303 is DH only, There is no way for a front mech, and the geometry is pretty slack, having said that you can tighten it with the adjustable cam on the top rail. 64 or 66deg head angle.
Howard at Bromley has one, and he dod the ful Poass Portes Du Soliel route on it (some 95km with uplifts), and I have to say, it really does pedal amazingly well, no bobbing, just forward acceleration! Its quite amazing.
Depends if your freeriding is uplift assisted mainly, or if your Freeride is pedal up hills to get to it?
Having said that, the 303 is great, and if you can fit one into your line up of bikes, then go for it!
I'm thinking about getting 303 but I'm concerned with my weight of 260lb trial ready. Do you guys have any experience or knowledge of 303's rider weight limit. If there isn't one, what spring would you recommend for my weight?
You did it! No turning back now, you will be a rail convert! mine rides awesome! Just get some Green shimano grease! thats the magic stuff you need.
Mine has a saint 83mm chainset on it, with loads of the black spacers, this chainset is the key. I can take a pic so you can see the spacers set up on mine if you like. its an ex Factory race bike, so set up to perfection!
Yes if you could send me a pic that would be great !!! I do have a lovely king one floating around so thats cool too This is the best xmas ever lol thanks Andrew.
my bike is just to begin its transformation: * some respraying is needed * aluminum needs some polishing * a lot of loving care is needed * diet is needed (just to get it down to 40lb)
AND
time and a better weather is needed to finally enjoy it!
I saw your yeti 303 - and that is one sweet machine. It must have cost you a fortune. I love the colour scheme and will try to match it with my ride. I don't really like yellow, but it did not stop me getting 303DH.
I am new to downhill and from the outset it looks stupid to have yeti 303 as my first DH bike, but I like unique things and having a bike from a limited run of 100 is something that makes me smile.
I would greatly appreciate any help, recommendations, tips and general comments about yeti 303. I hope that some time next year, once my bike is ready and all the swaps/resprays/lots of loving care are done, it will take it to Cwmcarn for its virgin ride ;D
Yeti 303 Frame in Medium with FOX DHX 5.0 (standard) DT 5.1 Rims. DT hubs, I think they are 240 XT Shifter Control Tech bars. Thomson X4 Stem and Masterpiece Seat post. SDG Ti Fly saddle Saint Cranks. Saint Brakes (very good) with 203mm Rotors. Maxxis Tyres, 3C on front, and worn out HighRoller on back. XTR Rear mech. Road Cassette- its very tiny! Yeti Grips. Fox 40 Forks- these are not team ones, the bike was complete minus forks. Shimano SPD pedals. E13 Light Guide with bash guard part added.
think that covers it.
Overall I am well impressed, I am not a natural at DH, but that does not mean I can't enjoy my limits on a top bike like this!
Next year I will get to Cwmcarn, FortWilliam and Hamsterley among other places for some DH action! Maybe I can get better.
I just looked at my BB set up, the E13 is on the ISCG tabs, and on the non drive side there are 2 black spacers, I cannot see the drive side though.
Make sure you let me know in advance the dates when you are going to Cwncarn or Fort William. I hope to join you and that would be great to have 2 of very rare bikes in the UK the same at the same place.
My problem with going places is that I am limited to locations where there is a train station. I live in London and train is my only option. It is sad I have no car but I cannot afford it and then I would not really use it.
If you have a chance, could you check the weight of your bike? Is seems quite light, some of the components are similar to mine, other would be way to light for me (250lb ride ready), wheels in particular. I am going to try to get my 303 to about 40lb, however, I am not on the "mission". I don not want to compromise strength over the weight, but some parts could be easily changed for lighter ones.
I will put a note on here when I go to Fort William(etc) next time, It does not open until May, so keep a look out. there is a rail way station in the middle of FortWilliam, so either we could meet up at Leicester Station, and I'll take you up(if I get a towbar) , or I can meet you there. Its 400miles from my house in the Midlands.
Amen to that, Cwmcarn is awsome. Me and my buddy are already planning our return trip for 08. Broke a finger on first run in March and got black and blue but the place is inspiring.
I can't wait to try my new 40's there. I'll hopefully be changing my DH9 to a 303 next year. So if you know anyone looking out for a mint DH9 frame I'm your man!
I'm jealous of you 303 owners by the way. The wife won't let me spend the cash until I've saved it all so I'm hammering the overtime. Apparently I don't need one because I'm just a novice. Cow!
