After the recent Mountain Mayhem event I'm going to try and make my bike a bit more mud friendly, as I ended up dragging my bike for several miles when the wheels stopped turning!
I have some super skinny 1.5 mud tyres, but found that a lot of the mud/grass clogged around both mechs.
I think I have two choices: 1. Ride singlespeed 2. Fit an internally-geared hub such as the Rohloff Speedhub (http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/)
I remember seeing some photos on Yetifan ages ago about a Yeti fitted with a Rohloff and just wondered if anyone else had done this. If so, do you have details of which model of hub + accessories you had to fit to get it working.
Cheers, Gary

I've just built up my Arc as a SSpeed, rigid too for the moment until a decision on forks... I reckon I could have hired it out at Mayhem! (not sure how to post a pic here though.. wil investigate) had a first spin over the weekend, not the comfiest when you're used to full-sus though :-) Evo Stu

I like that Stu, suitably minimalist.

Why do people think that their gears are a problem when it's muddy, The Pros who did a nuts load more laps than the average punter were all running geared bikes and they didnt get problems or resort to Rohloff hubs or singlespeed. Ask Nick Craig about his set up.
Just stick to XTR that will solve all your mud problems.

the other thing about the pros is they are going a tad faster than us mortals so the mud gets flung or shaken off!
I tried to ask Nick Craig about his set up as he passed me on the climb at MM but he seemed a little preoccupied with traveling 3 times faster than me! did seem to work okay for him though!

Stu - Arc single speed looks mint, wish I had the knees to attempt to ride such a bike

For anyone who's interested, I've ordered the following parts: 8027 - Speedhub 500/14 CC DB OEM 8250 - Chain tensioner 8227 - Axle Plate CC OEM2 8281 - Brake Disc 160mm 8550 - Speedbone I'll post a photo when it's assembled.

Stef who rode for us came 7th (16 laps) in the solo event, he did it all on an ASR, he didnt get mud problems, he isnt whingeing that the gears wouldnt work, he rode on standard XT. Trust me I have set up a lot of bikes for mayhem, HTN, 24/12 etc etc. You dont need Rohloff, just a well set up gear system and suitable tyres at a suitable pressure.

If you read the original post, I wasn't whingeing about anything, I was asking if anyone had bought a Rohloff hub, and if so, which components they'd purchased. At no point have I or anyone else doubted your ability to setup bikes for all the races you claim to have. At the end of the day, I'l fit my Rohloff hub, and if it doesn't work I'll just take it off again. No big deal. Life's too short. Chill Winston!

i did read your original post, you were moaning that your XTR bike didnt work at mayhem and you wanted to either single speed it or fit a Rohloff, I was just trying to help you not waste your money on a rohloff, But fire away, (I'm called Ed by the way )
