575 with an rp23 is a pretty good ride, matched with a F140 for XC stuff. You can get it down easy to 28lbs, at a push 26lbs. Below this you're running into the realm of getting a light 575 but not being able to use it to its full potential. Sure some guys have em at 24lbs but where exactly can you run em - no further than an ASR and that would drop at least another 1lb.
ASR in my opinion would be the perfect bike for the TransWales. Light, fast and comfy. Not essential though. If you are just enjoying it rather than racing for the top spots a lighter 575 is well up to the job.

I've recently fitted an RP23 on my old(ish) ASR and a DHX5 Air on my ASX. Obviously both bikes ride different to a 575, but the thing I noticed better about the RP23 than the DHX5 Air is that with the pro pedal set correctly the RP23 climbs like a hardtail, and is still great on the descents (even with pro pedal still switched on). Whereas I found the DHX5 Air still suffers from a bit of pedal-induced bobbing, even with pro pedal set high. I guess that this is just because the DHX5 Air isn't an XC shock, and has to cope with a lot more travel.
Both shocks were straight forward to fit, so you could always get an RP23 just for the Welsh event, and then switch it back afterwards.
If you call Mojo (www.mojo.co.uk) they have a few of last years RP23's for sale at 20% discount.
