Hi guys, just wanted to get peoples feedback on the weight of their 303's and some opinion on if the mystical 40lbs is realistic? Given the current weight of mine I can't see it! it's no. 80 on the your 303 section, changes since include ti spring, LG1 guide, non vented rotors for the moto V2's, easton carbon bars and PG970 road cassette. any thought or discussion welcome still trying to get the 24th off work Andrew!

It is one sweet looking beast. I was going to pursue "40lb" magic but at the moment my bike is in pieces, still waiting for some parts and unable therefore to tell you the weight.
Any comments of carbon bars yet? I don't think I am going to get them anyway but since DH people as so afraid of carbon I would love to know how they work.
I am currently wondering what colour of ck hubs to get, see my poll vote and let me know what you think.
cheers

I think 40lbs in the magic figure, I know the Yeti team say that theirs weigh in at that.
I am not so sure, I think mine is about the same as yours, I have a Ti fly seat, and a masterpiece seat post.
but have a Steel spring, but I think my wheels are silly light, DT 5.1 rims, on very very small looking hubs. They are lighter than the ones on my 575 !!
I know the yeti team cut the end off one of the rails to save weight!
Hope you can make the 24th.
Andrew

Hi,
I think DH people don't like carbon bars because if and when the do fail they would snap, rather than an alu bar which would bend. I'm pretty light and have good faith in Easton bars having been using them for donkeys years now. But I guess I wouldn't be as happy if they snapped on me and I ended up eating the stem!

Alu bars dont always bend!! Just ask Justin Leov (see letter page)
I've seen a few sets of Alu over the years just snap, If they are scratched then this makes it worse.
Carbon, I know some companies build in extra strength so they don't suffer a catastrophic failure, unsure which ones though.

Cheers for that,
Andrew's comments about his DT5.1 rims set me off researching rims. Looks like there's a lot for me to save their, I've been to my LBS to get a quote for going tubeless with mavic 823's rather than my 729's. In theory I should save 50g per rim, plus the weight of 2 inner tubes, with the tyres being a little heavier for tubeless. This is all based on manufacturers weights, but there could be 1.5lbs to save, and its rotating weight.
I'm going to have a look at your crank idea.
cheers

I thought it would be worth sharing the results of my winter rebuilding and weight saving attempts. 1st was pedals, changing from Easton Flatboys to Wellgo MG1 saved 1/2lb!! Changing to 823 rims and tubeless tyres saved another 1lb. so it now sits at 41.97lbs. I don't really want to take this any further now, I could change the chainring to E13, chain to KMC and seat to SDG Yeti, but the payoff versus expense is now getting silly. Time to start riding Any questions feel free to ask.

Questions: * Could you list the full spec? * What KMC chain you are going to run? * What colour are your Wellgos? * What hubs are you running or will be running?

Hi
Thanks for the spec.
Mine is very similar with the following differences: Forks: Fox40RC2 with flat, boxxer like crown Stem: Sunline boxxer stem Bars: Easton Monkeybar ea70 Grips: Sunline White Brakes: Formula Oro Bianco 200/200 Cassette: Shimano Ultegra 11-21 or 12-23 Tyres: Michelin DH16 front/Michelin DH24 rear, running tubeless with mavic 823 Chainring: e13 38t Chain: at the moment something like mid range shimano, it the future KMC x0SL if I find some cheap supplier Rear mech: Shimano dura ace Shifter: Shimano Saint Pedals: att the moment some no name pedals, soon wellgo mg1s Seatpost: KCNC Ti Pro 350mm Seat: Charge White
Surprise, surprise, I did not realize that so many bits are different. Since my bike is still in pieces, I used MS excel to do some calculations and at the moment it weight 42.25lb. I think my target weight would be around 41.5lb but I am not stressed about it.
I hope to have it up and running at the very end of this month ;D

I borrowed the scales from my local bike shop, I've seen some on ebay occasionaly, but I guess most good bike shops would be able to order one for you.

shaneward202, I think the cheapest place to get them is Wiggle, in particular when you use their "£5 off" offer, which makes Ultimate Scale cost £49. Link: www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360019442&N=Ultimate%20Alpine%20Digital%20Scalecuthberm, I will be changing my wheels some time soon. Spec: Mavic 823 rims DT Swiss 440 hubs (20mm front / 150mm rear) 16mm brass nipples Spokes: either DT SuperComps or Sapim CX-Rays (if I find some reasonably priced supplier) in black Also, decided not to pursue a target weight of 41.5lb as 42lb is equally good and much more less expensive ;D
