Getting my plan together for my first Yeti, hopefully to buy by Feb. Before I ask the Tribe's opinion on fork choice, I'd better say who I am & what I do. I'm 45, weigh 210lb with kit, strong & pretty fit rider, but haven't currently got a man enough bike or skills to really hammer downhills. I won't ever become a big jumper, but I need something less XC twitchy & fragile & more "do anything" than my Trek Fuel 98 with 80mm of bounce, rim brakes & knachered forks. Heres the plan: any comments welcome- Yeti 575, medium, black ano, full carbon rear Headset: Chris King, Red Wheelset:DT Swiss EX 1750 red 20mm hubs, white rims Tyres: Maxxis?? Chainset, BB, F+R mech, cassette, brakes & shifters: all XT Seatpost: Thomson straight, black Seatpost QR: Red, Hope Stem: Thomson X4, 31.8, black, 70mm. 10 degree rise Bars: Race Face Atlas Low rise 31.8 Grips: Yeti lock on, red Saddle: SDG Bel Air Pedals: Shimano 647 Forks: This is the big question. Fox 32 Float 140 (only QR are they stiff enough?) Fox Vanilla (as above) RS Pike (seem good) Marzocchi 55ATA (same weight as Pike but 165-125 adjustable) Manitou Minute Ultimate IT (140, 20mm axle, 1800g weight OPINIONS WELCOME PLEASE....................................

I've got the 140 FLoat RLC, and they don't seem flexy to me.(compared to 130mm of the same)
I've not tried Rockshox for a while, but a few friends reckon that they have passed FOX now, I am still a FOX lover though.
I'd steer clear of the Manitou, too many issues with older models, maybe they are good now, but I doubt it. To risky with your own cash!

My first fork on 5.75 was an Talas RLC 2007, good fork but not very sensitive on small shocks. Now, i have got a Pike (model : Dual Air U-Turn 2007) from RS, i am very happy , good sensitive on small and big shocks.

Cheers for the advice chaps. I'm thinking that it's probably worth the 1/2 lb weight premium to go for 20mm bolt through. I'm no lightweight & would rather have something which tracks well & gives me confidence to hammer it. My current bike is a bit of a weight weenie machine & while it's fast on the flat & climbing, it shimmies like hell downhill or when cornering hard. Pity Fox don't do any of their 32 range in 20mm bolt through mode. Cheers & keep the advice coming.

Pikes seem to be much liked nowadays. I've had good luck with Marzocchi, but have no experience with anything as recent as the 55.

Im looking at an '08 575 and looking at that head tube, I would want either Fox 36's, or Marzocchi 55's The '08 frame looks so much tougher than '07.

I agree with Eddy B, the headtube is massive, so very much so, that a friend with an 05 575 thought his headset would not fit!
Compare an 08 headtube with an older model, and its huge!
the whole bike looks so much tougher, but its the same weight!

The 36s sound very tempting, but I've been looking at reviews on MTBR & they get a slating for not giving full travel, travel slipping down & lack of small bump sensitivity. Bit nervous about the 55s & Manitous, though both are extremely light especially the 55 at 4.65lb for 165mm- same as the Pike. I ride 90 percent of the time in Suffolk, so I don't want to be lugging a barge around, but I also need something which will build my confidence going down hill when I get to Yorkshire & Wales. I've given up trying serious stuff on my Trek:- numerous face plants because of steep steering angles & completely knackered RS Duke 80mm forks which tend to dive into ruts & stay there! i suspect that 140mm Pikes would be more than enough for a 45 year old who enjoys speed, but is never going to jump more than 3 feet. Having said that, the 55s or 36s would give confidence inspiring slack angles when I need it, even if I wouldn't use all the travel. Hmmmmm. Not sounding very decisive here, am I? Need to make the decision by mid Jan to order for Feb. Still time to think..................................................

I think you've got a nice dilema going on? plush stiff fox 36's or plush stiff marzocchi's,you can't loose either way, just don't go with rs,nowt but troublle imo.
