My LBS has just called and confirmed that my build will begin on Monday 4th Feb.
Build: SB66c with Turqoise detail - small Fox 34 Talas Hope Headset Easton Haven Stem Easton Haven Bars Yeti Grips XT Shifters XT Brakes XT Crankset 2x10 (26-38) XT Front Mech XT Rear Mech XT Chain XT Cassette - 11-36 Reverb Seat Post Fizik Gobi Kium saddle
Everything so far is black apart from the little bit of turquoise in the detailng and the magnesium in the stem.
As for wheels - TBD. Trying to decide between Easton Haven (alloy) or Hope Pro 2 with chinese carbon rims. I can find the a 2012 Haven but only in Magnesium which looks a bit (no, very) bling and goes somewhat against the black stealth look. I can get the Havens in time for the build next week, or the carbon will be the end of Feb which will mean running with Hope Pro 2/Mavix 717's for a month. Tyres will be Schwalbe Hans Dampf.

Hans Dampf on 717's - interesting.
Like your spec, but would go 28t/40t on the cranks and prob look for wider bars, I originally had Haven Carbon bars on mine, but the 711mm width was a tad narrow. After experimenting ended up with some Crank Bros Carbon bars which are 780mm - although I reckon 750mm wide is probably the happy medium for the 66C.

The Hans Dampf will go on the new wheels, which will be wider than the 717's. As for the cranks I'm happy with 26/38, but I do take your point on the bars. Have been thinking the same. I'll see how it goes and may change later.

handlebar width is purely determined by the width of your shoulders. I wouldnt ever say a certain bike needs a certain width of handlebar.
gear ratios, eg crankset should be based around where you ride.
i'm running hans dampf on stans arch rims, which are fairly narrow & they're fine.. but yes they are better supported on a wider profile rim.

Well the build is delayed Forks aren't available as yet. Wheels ordered, tyres arrived from Germany today. Decided that I'll try tubeless for the first time. Wheels are UST so hopefully it should be reasonably easy. And Scant - where I ride - all over. Ride a lot at Cannock, but get out for rides in the peaks, wales, welsh trail centres, lakes, etc. So I need something that will help me up the hills!!! And the bars I'll try with the havens. If it feels too narrow I'll look at something wider. Wide concerns me at places like cannock as it can be quite tight in the trees at times.

I ride at Cannock a lot too, will keep an eye out for you,
I have renthal bars on mine, at 740 I think they are too wide for me at Cannock, elsewhere they feel good. I'll probably trim them to 720 eventually.
Sb climbs itself(almost), so you'll be alright on the ups.
Ust is a good system, just add a little latex to take care of thorns and you'll probably never have a puncture again.

About the bar width, why don't you buy a wide bar and cut it? Renthal got plenty of cutmarks and it's probebly a 10 min job or so. If it's too wide you just cut it until you got the right length.

Andrew - is yours a turquoise sb66c - white forks/wheels. If so you passed me a couple of weeks back whilst I was riding with my mates wife. I had a good gander as you went past, but you weren't hanging round.
It's a good call on getting wider bars and then trimming as required rather than buying another set if these are too narrow.

Any of you Cannock regulars out tonight ?
Just got back to my digs after a long day, a ride and an Indian. I passed about twenty riders earlier on, one group of about fifteen and two pairs, all going round the Dog the 'wrong way'. I wouldn't mind but I had to give way twice to the big group because they were finishing their backward lap as I started my second circuit.
It's not like there isn't enough space to get lost in. I ride here about a dozen times a year when I am passing through with work, mostly in the dark, and all I can do is follow the dots !
Everyone I met tonight was going the wrong way and I'm beginning to feel I am the odd one out. Or am I missing something !

I so almost went with the e13 wheels, but got a good deal on Easton Havens. I've heard of a few issues on the bearings, but there only a few quid a pop so shouldn't be too much of an issue. And FF - riding the wrong way round at night is the right way round Try it. it's very different.

Bike shop called yesterday - all the bits are in Building it today ;D ;D ;D Just set up my wheels - tubeless Hans Dampfs on Easton Havens. I've had a workout just getting them to pump up!!! Done now. Off to the shop to drop off the wheels and seat post and then for my last ride on my old faithfully Stumpy. Shame I have to work tomorrow - might get out for a local cheeky ride in the evening. Pics tomorrow hopefully.

Well I've picked up the Yeti today. Set it up and ridden up and down the road. Want to get out for a proper ride now. Looking forward to the mid week peaks ride on Tuesday. Thanks to Andrew for sorting the axle yesterday. I would have had to wait a little longer otherwise.
