I have been out over the last few weeks and each time the temp has been below freezing, my rather expensive Chris King rear hub has decided to freeze up resulting in me not being able to peddle. This has been quite embarrassing considering the price I paid for the damn thing, not to mention the fact that me and my mates (who took great pleasure in doing so) have had to p**s on the thing to thaw it out. Anyone else out there had the same problem? Do I need to contact Chris King or do I have to accept that it don't work in the cold!!!!

Has anybody had the hub apart, or is it as it came out of the box? sounds like the wrong type of lube (too thick) affecting the ring drive.
How did you decide which part of the hub to p1ss on?

shimano ones work in freezing temps. i'd say you have got water in there somewhere. grease doesn't freeze to at least -20 deg C, well not that sort of grease. i'd defo say you got water in it. strip and regrease may do the trick.

I had this happen in really cold weather over Xmas. It was about -6.
All it took after we pissed on it! was
A clean, and just to take the hub apart and clean the inside of it.
I then re lubed the ringdrive with the Chris king lube, and it was amazing, no more frozen hub.
But for the record, my brakes both froze up too, as did my headset, so did the river where we were staying!
Taking your hub apart is so easy, you just need to the 4 pin tool for the non drive side of it.

How much is the tool and where can you get one. Where can I find out how to take the thing apart.
It froze outside the hut at Lllandegla and the guys at one planet said I needed to pour warm water on the hub which he demonstrated by pouring a jug of warm water on the inside of the wheel and proved that it worked, I guess it was just heat transference. He then said that if it happens on a ride then I have to get my old man out!

Hope hubs freeze too!
we did a winter solstice ride once, starting at 4am in the Peaks and crazy Rob had his hub freeze up when we stopped so we all had to take a leak on it too

i don't know if it's certain parts but they sem so compete better in less usual circumstances. my camel bak froze over and my bike kept on going.
