Folks I have a much loved 2007 vintage red coloured 575, that's been dormant for several years whilst I've been riding a 29er. I've been looking hard at it recently, thinking how good would it be to convert to 1 x 11 Shimano XT drive train with a 27.2 Thomson dropper post. But then again this won't be cheap, and there is the concern about the longevity of sourcing quality 26 inch tyres and rims. Has anyone done this? Is the 1 x 11 conversion straight forward? I could easily put the money towards a new bike and get 10 years of design improvement, but then again ....

The chainline changed on bikes a while back, so maybe yours would not work as great with 1x11 as a brand new frame would. Parts are getting more scarce now too.
IMO retire it.

I have recently done this on my MY07 575; I changed the drive to a SRAM 1 x11 set up my modifying my rear free hub to accept the additional gears. I messed about with a few shims and different front sprockets to get the best chain line and now it's perfect and shifts great. I couldn't afford to buy a new bike so I bought a dropper post, new brakes, fork (I had to as my original ones cracked), larger discs and few other bits and bobs. It is now as modern as it physically can be and will tide me over for another few years.

IMO no. I did just that and very soon later, I wished that I had saved the money towards a modern geometry 27.5 or 29.
Ok to upgrade if you aren’t tempted to try anybody else’s newer yeti or watch any new mtb videos.
