Hi all Just received my brand new 2013 Yeti Big Top frame from Chain Reaction Cycles today, as you can imagine very excited to get a look at it and get ready to build it up this weekend. On closure inspection I noticed a small chip in the Ali section on the rear driveside of the frame. The chip is very close to the bonded connection between the Ali and Carbon. If it was on another part of the frame I would be so concerned but due to its location I'm not as happy. Has anyone else had issues with paint quality on new frames?

Nothing a little touch up paint won't fix. Chances are you'll take that much paint off in the first ride anyway

Ok great thank you. Spoke to CRC today and they said that frame warrenty would not be affected by touching any paint chips up.

Enjoy your new bike when it's built up! I think those ones from CRC are just about the last ones left available new, anywhere. Love my Big Top, best hardtail I have owned. Fabulous.Post some pics when you can!
That said, the paint on my 2011 Big Top does appear a bit brittle, thinner and easier to chip compared to my old 2003 Kokopelli ASR. On my Koko, the paint seems thicker and tougher, able to handle scratches better, hardly any chipping... Not the same quality/paint technology perhaps. But I guess it's a bit subjective...The Koko's and Yeti's of that era were made in the USA, the modern Yeti's all come from the far east, I believe. From your picture, it looks like a relatively minor nick, I doubt that there is any structural damage to the frame, easy to just touch up, I wouldn't worry about it, though not super when you haven't even ridden it yet.
I had seen some extensive paint damage on another turq/white Big Top at an event, though I didn't get to speak to the owner about how it happened, a big area of paint missing on the down tube. So when I got mine, the first thing I did was apply some clear vinyl (if you are in the UK, you can get kits for this, I believe?) to the top tube, downtube and stays...not the seat tube, and that's where there's a few chips, hahaha.. Also, after 2 years, my BB shell has taken a bit of a pounding, the paint whacked off by rocks and trail shrapnel. I had put on a thick piece of frame specific protective vinyl on the underside of the downtube, and just where it ended, at the weld, the damage happens...so it goes. But my Koko, with less protection, shows hardly any paint damage in the same area, even though it was ridden way more over the years. A friend of mine reckons the 29r's incur more rock strikes because the tire is closer to the bb, downtube....though his particular complaint is about the flying rocks hitting his feet more, than on his 26r, he has a section of old tire cable tied to the underside of his chinese carbon frame for protection...not the prettiest solution...but effective apparently.

Still need to fine tune the fit, but first ride yesterday and it's one stiff frame.
