All, Its time to replace the rear gear cable on my asr5. The existing cable seems to have been chewed up pretty badly where it exits the frame near the RD (looks like its been cut into by the cover). Question. What's the best way of stopping the damage occuring in the future? And second anybody have any tips on replacement (is it easy to thread through the cable?). Thanks

A few ways to do it but overall you want to use either the existing outer casing or the internal wire to assist feeding through your new replacement. How I normally do it is disconnect the inner cable from the rear derailleur snip off a bit of cable to get rid of any fray or kinks (so it will pull through smoothly). Then open up the shifter pod and push the cable through (note it will need indexed all the way out).. then pull the inner cable through (basically as in video below but its easier with Shimano). So your left with the outer still in position.. I then attach the new outer to the old cable still in position with insulating tape and carefully pull the new outer through the rear triangle. peel off the tape and continue install. There are other techniques like using old inner cable as a guide but I've never ever had an issue with the above so just stick with it. Just make sure the new cable is perfectly end to end with the old cable and your insulating tape is on nicely. Can be tricky fishing through a new outer so best to do the above or similar.
