Hello, have a 98 AS-3 that I am still slowly getting in shape. The main issue now is what to do about the rear shock. It is a Rock Shock Coupe Deluxe, and needs to be replaced or refurbished(which Hippie Tech will do for between $75-150). I am having a hard time finding a replacement, and am unsure of mods that would allow the use of a newer shock. Any ideas for other shocks I could use with as little modification as possible? Thanks

That's about all you can use.
No new shock has that fitting.
Old rockshox is about all you'll ever get really.
Maybe risse offer something still?

What about having a piece machined to fit in the clampdown part of the frame, so that I can use a newer shock with two eyelets? (my LBS suggested this) That way if the frame fails at some point, I can use the shock in another bike. Thanks Eric, that gives me another option, especially if Hippietech wants to charge the high end, I can get a Risse shock for slightly more $...

Then there is nothing to stop the shock folding in the frame.
You will have created a hinge.
Try it! You will see it won't work.
Bike shop just gave you very bad advice.

Those frames are notorious for breaking, so if you ride it hard, it don't last long.
The chainstays are the issue, the rest of it is very tough.

yes i can confirm what andrew wrote, i rode mine hardly and the chainstays breaked always (2 times), my luck was that Yeti distributer (once for germany was volant sport) offered me to that an AS-R frame with less pricing... ;)and 3 weeks later i received complete new rear frame from yeti u.s.a. ;P
